A brief personal history
The 15th of Juli 2008, is a day I will never forget.
Since that day I am inevitably connected to the air and clouds.
That day I flew for the first time a single seated glider plane; my first Solo.
Twenty-three years ago I was born in Heemstede, a small city near Schiphol Airport.
I’m passionated for aviation since my birth. I’m very happy to be the proud owner of an Air Transport Pilot Licence.
Now I realize that in the time before I started my ATPL course, I’ve had the right jobs and hobbies to be well prepared for the job of pilot. It has always been a challenge for me to perform under pressure, to think preventively to avoid complications, to find solutions, and the most effective way to succeed with a task. This is what I have always been looking for in the things I did. With the dynamics of flying and being in the air, surrounded by the cockpit and clouds, everything comes together for me.
“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” – Leonardo da Vinci

| During my high school years I worked in a theater as an audio technician. Began with cleaning the depository, and ended as chief technician. This kind of work is similar to the work in the cockpit I think. You are surrounded by the controls of the systems you know so well. You feel the presence of the hundreds of spectators. And with every button, switch or lever you touch on the mixer, they hear the result. Even when you make a mistake, the show must go on. You need to think ahead, you need to know what is next, and without systematic working and good coordination with the rest of the crew you will make mistakes. With this job I learned to have the same mind set as one needs to have in the cockpit. | My family is fond of sailing and boating. I have been sailing for as long as I can remember. I joined as a crew member for regional sailing competitions. The last few years I was captain of one of the sailing boats. Here I learned what it takes to lead and motivate a team. And to make good decisions in critical situations. For instance in a regatta during a storm, with one man short, fighting for the first place. When I was on the water I always looked at the sky fascinated by the weather, especially with storms building up. I always longed to be ”part of the weather”; to feel those great forces. With the switch from sailing to glider flying I succeeded in that. For soon I flew in the raising air of a building thunderstorm. |
